Genetic Modification (GM) takes genes from one species and inserts them into another--splicing genes between unrelated species that would NEVER crossbreed in nature--creating questions and concerns.

Foremost among the concerns is safety. In 30 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production of GM foods because they have not been thouroughly tested or proven to be safe. In the U.S., FDA approval of GM crops is mostly based on studies conducted by the companies who created them and profit from their sale.

On farms growing GM crops, a field can now be sprayed with chemicals and everything will die except for the resistant crop--meaning that herbicides can be applied liberally, even directly contacting the actual crop. So, even though GM crops are promoted as using less pesticides/herbicides, in fact, they actually use more.

Proponents of GMO's claim it has the capacity to feed the world. But, GM crops have not benifited farming conditions in poor countries. The companies who make the genetically modified seeds, also own the rights to the technology and they require farmers to sign agreements when they buy thier seeds that prohibit them from saving and replanting seeds. Farmers are forced to buy new seeds each year from the biotech companies and this cost makes it prohibitive for small, poorer countries to grow this food.

It is estimated that GMO's are now present in more than 80% of packaged products in the average U.S. or Canadian grocery store, however, Canada and the United States are the only industialized countires that do NOT have mandatory labeling regulations in place.
